Attacking

As an attacking player, you need speed, technique and a good idea of positioning to be successful.  If you watch professional players, you can see that their runs are all perfectly timed and into space behind defenders.

Watching other players is one of the best ways to learn and improve your game.

As a footballer it is important to balance your training. As you get older, as a footballer, you tend to prioritize strength training over all else. But you must also train your touch, stamina and dribbling to be able to play at a high level. It is a common misconception that a defender does not need to know how to dribble or an attacker does not need to know how to defend. Every player must have some knowledge on every aspect of the game. They should be able to understand each other's struggles and be able to understand each other. So while you should be training your body to be in top form, you should also make sure to train your brain.

Flair

Flair is a very big part in an attackers game, is flair.  Flair is the ability to beat a defender using your skill, this can be watching him and waiting for an opening or using a skill such as the step over or the elastico to get past him and score.

You should always attack at speed, for this forces the defender to move backwards and you will always be faster running forward than them running backwards. You can use skills such as step overs to make the defender hesitate, therefore forcing him to guess which direction you will go in.

Make quick touches and be ready to react quickly when the defender tries to take the ball from you, this requires for you to watch the defenders movement and wait for a mistake to exploit.  Some great examples of  flair are Mbappe and his speed and technique and Messi with his faints and quick touches. Both of them are superb at dribbling defenders, so as an attacking player it is very good to watch these professionals beat their defenders and try to learn from them.

Runs

Runs are the most important part in an attackers game, they create chances to score. The ability to run at the right time and into space is a great thing to have in your game.

When running on the wing, you must run in one of two ways, towards the goal in a diagonal line or down the line in a straight line. When going to score, it is best to use the diagonal run, this can be used in counter attacks or if there's an abundance of space behind the defence.

The straight run can be used to create time for your teammates to arrive into the box, to receive a cross. Either way, you must be ready to run at any moment, and be able to judge when to run to avoid being offside.

The final thing is that you should always be providing an option for your teammates, for this you must be in space or run into space, to be able to receive the ball from them and relieve some pressure off of your team.

Physicality

Physicality is another large part of an attacker's game, for it allows you to keep the ball. The ability to push defenders off the ball and win it back in crucial positions is very important. Therefore an attacker should maintain a good level of both upper body and lower body strength in order to perform well.

In younger age groups this is not so relevant as you don’t really need to push players off the ball and mainly focus on keeping the ball and playing it around. But as you get older and start to play on a full size pitch, you will need a good amount of strength to stand a chance against the stronger defenders.

A good example of this strength can be Haaland or Adama Traore who both use their strength to be lethal in front of goal.

If you are wondering how to improve your strength, see the gym page on this website for more information.

Stamina

Stamina is very important in football, the ability to keep running at the same speed the whole game, can put you above everyone else. It allows you to create more chances, more options for your teammates, and beat defenders throughout the game.

If you train two times a week, and have a match on the weekends, then you might not need to do any fitness training, however as the level increases, you might have to start doing cardio sessions. This can include going running, cycling or swimming. I advise doing something that you enjoy, as cardio can be tiring and if you don't enjoy it than you are less likely to stay consistent and increase your stamina.

It is important that you don't overdo it with the cardio. I advise not running after an intense training session or match, for this can result in injury. But still try to include at least 1 hour of cardio or sport in your daily routine.
